About the Small Business Directory

The Small Business Directory represents the work of the Entrepreneurship & Economic Wellbeing program at the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City. The program is comprised of three projects:

  1. Economic Wellbeing

  2. New Roots in Salt Lake City

  3. Spice Kitchen Incubator

Entrepreneurship & Economic Wellbeing entails assisting individuals and families meet their most basic survival needs and realize sustainable income and assets so that they may prosper. The Economic Wellbeing team’s goal is to help these individuals navigate the struggles they face as they adjust to living in the United States. It is the teams’ goal to help these people create a stable financial foundation for themselves and their families.

Economic Wellbeing is comprised of two parts. The Financial Capability Program provides a foundation to assist clients realize a secure financial future. The Small Business Programs provides business counseling services and market access opportunities, among other components. This Small Business Directory is one such market access opportunity.

The Entrepreneurship part of the program goes toward enabling these people to attain these goals through entrepreneurial business development. The Entrepreneurship program includes the Small Business Program, New Roots in Salt Lake City and the Spice Kitchen Incubator projects.

New Roots in Salt Lake City seeks to build a healthier community through the development of small scale, urban farms and community gardens in Salt Lake City. Accessing affordable and nutritious food can be a challenge for families in Salt Lake City. One of the primary goals of New Roots is to provide the communities with access to fresh, local, affordable, and culturally appropriate food.

Spice Kitchen Incubator is a business incubator that brings together refugees and other disadvantaged community members interested in starting a full or part-time food business. Spice Kitchen Incubator ensures participants receive technical assistance and training, have affordable access to commercial kitchen space and learn the steps to establishing a successful food business.

Each of these three projects (Entrepreneurship, New Roots and Spice Kitchen) is comprised of separate teams collaborating to assist refugees, new Americans and disadvantaged individuals and families realize independence and self-sufficiency.

Every business listed in this directory is a product of the Entrepreneurship & Economic Wellbeing program. Most people in the program are refugees or new Americans, some are disadvantaged individuals. Each business is a part of the program where they are learning to operate their businesses. This directory is meant to highlight and promote these businesses.
